Red Wings Expected to Pursue Veteran Defenseman with $70 Million Contract
The Detroit Red Wings are predicted to be active in the offseason, with one forecast suggesting they will target a former first-overall pick.
According to PuckPedia, a platform where users can propose trades and signings, one user expects the Red Wings to sign Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad to a seven-year, $70 million deal, averaging $10 million per season.
Ekblad is currently in the final year of his eight-year, $60 million contract with the Panthers. A $10 million per season deal would represent a significant pay increase, potentially considered an overpay. However, it might be the offer needed to convince Ekblad to leave Florida for Detroit.
If the Red Wings manage to sign Ekblad, he would strengthen their defensive corps, forming a dynamic top pair with Moritz Seider. His Stanley Cup experience would also provide valuable leadership to Detroit’s younger defensemen.
So far this season, Ekblad has posted 3 goals and 30 assists for 33 points in 56 games. He was the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
