Nittany Lions Add Transfer from Cincinnati

Josh Reed, a 6-7 guard who spent three seasons at Cincinnati, has announced he is transferring to Penn State, making him the first player to join the Nittany Lions this offseason. Reed, who has one season of eligibility remaining, shared the news on Instagram Tuesday.

After entering the transfer portal on April 7, Reed departs Cincinnati following a solid career. Last season, he averaged 4.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, playing in 33 games and starting in several toward the end of the year. Reed became a regular starter, starting nine of the final 10 games, and had a standout performance in the Big 12 Tournament, scoring 19 points, including a career-high 15 points by halftime, in a victory over Oklahoma State.

In addition to his offensive contributions, Reed is also known for his defensive abilities. Over his first two years at Cincinnati, he appeared in 64 games, often as a defensive specialist. This past season, he was named one of the team’s top two defensive players.

A Rivals top-150 recruit in the 2022 class, Reed was a two-time state champion in Atlanta. He decided to transfer to explore new opportunities in the next phase of his basketball career.

Penn State is gearing up for a busy offseason. The team lost five seniors and saw three members of the 2024 recruiting class enter the portal, including 4-star prospect Miles Goodman, who has since committed to Oregon. Last season, Penn State finished with a 16-15 record, 6-14 in the Big Ten, and missed out on a postseason tournament.

Second-year head coach Mike Rhoades emphasized the importance of rebuilding the team’s roster for the future. “We wanted to move full-speed ahead with offseason plans, building our program, and restructuring the roster,” Rhoades said.
