IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The high school player chosen as the 2025 Iowa Mr. Basketball will be joining the Iowa Hawkeyes, head coach Ben McCollum announced on Thursday.
Trevin Jirak, a 6’11”, 260-pound center from Iowa Valley High School in West Des Moines, has signed a scholarship agreement with the University of Iowa men’s basketball program.
He becomes the first Iowan to sign under the new head coach for the Hawkeyes.
“Trevin is a talented post player with abilities in passing, posting up, and shooting,” Coach McCollum said. “He grew a few inches during the school year, reaching about 6-foot-11, which should make a difference in the Big Ten Conference. We’re excited to bring him to Iowa City.”
Jirak was awarded the title of 2025 Iowa Mr. Basketball after averaging 16.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
This accolade is presented by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association and the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association to recognize the top high school boys basketball player in the state.
He joins a revitalized Hawkeyes basketball team under the new head coach Ben McCollum. With Jirak’s addition, the Hawkeyes have welcomed seven new players to the roster this spring, including Drake transfers Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard, Tavion Banks, and returning player Cooper Koch.
Former Hawkeyes Pryce Sandfort and Josh Dix moved to new teams through the transfer portal after the dismissal of former head coach Fran McCaffery in March. Last season, the Hawkeyes finished with a record of 17-16 and were eliminated in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.
McCaffery has since taken a new head coaching position at Penn.
Carter Kingsbury also announced his entry into the transfer portal last week.
McCollum has also included Josh Sash and Bryston Williams on the Hawkeyes’ coaching staff. Both served as assistants under McCollum at Drake last season.
