Opportunistic Guard Tayton Conerway Commits to Indiana
Tayton Conerway, the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year from Troy, will bring a dynamic edge to Indiana’s backcourt.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana made a successful sweep in securing commitments from two transfer players who visited over the weekend.
Former Troy guard Tayton Conerway confirmed his commitment to the Hoosiers late Wednesday night via Field Of 68.
Conerway was considered one of the top guards available in the transfer portal. Indiana had already locked in a commitment on Tuesday from another highly sought-after portal guard, Lamar Wilkerson, after both players visited the Hoosiers’ campus.
Conerway’s journey to this point is noteworthy. A native of Burleson, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, he attended two junior colleges—Grayson College and Ranger College—spending three seasons at the JUCO level.
During his final year at Ranger College, Conerway earned Texas Association Basketball Coaches Men’s Player of the Year honors in 2023. Coming off the bench in all but four of Ranger’s 35 games, Conerway averaged 15.7 points and 6.2 rebounds, shooting 48.4% from the field and 34.4% from beyond the arc.
His success at the JUCO level earned him a spot at Troy, where he made an immediate impact. In the 2024 season, Conerway averaged 11.8 points off the bench before moving into the starting lineup for the 2024-25 season. There, he posted 14.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while shooting 47.1% from the field.
Notably, Conerway led the Sun Belt Conference in steals for two consecutive seasons, averaging 2.1 steals per game in 2024 and 2.8 in 2025. His defensive pressure is exactly what Indiana head coach Mike Woodson values in his guards.
Conerway helped propel Troy to a 23-11 record and a Sun Belt Conference championship, with Troy advancing to its third-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. However, their tournament run ended with a 76-57 loss to Kentucky in the first round.
Under previous rules, Conerway would have lost his Division I eligibility due to his three years at the JUCO level and two at Troy. But following a legal case involving Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, the NCAA granted an additional year of eligibility to former JUCO players who would have exhausted their eligibility by 2025. This change allowed Conerway to maintain his eligibility.
Conerway’s addition bolsters a growing Indiana roster that now includes Wilkerson, guard Jasai Miles (North Florida), forward Reed Bailey (Davidson), swingman Tucker DeVries (West Virginia via Drake), and Conor Enright (DePaul via Drake), along with incoming freshman Trent Sisley.
However, Indiana’s frontcourt remains a point of concern, as the Hoosiers missed out on junior college center Emeka Opurum, who committed to Auburn on Wednesday.
