North Carolina has strengthened its defensive line through the Transfer Portal. On Friday, Lavon Johnson, a defensive tackle from Maryland, signed with the Tar Heels. This update was first reported by Pete Nakos.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 311 pounds, Johnson hails from Allentown, Pennsylvania, and entered the Transfer Portal on Wednesday, still having two years of eligibility left.
As noted by Jeff Ermann of 247Sports’ Maryland site, Johnson was anticipated to play a key role for the Terrapins this upcoming season due to the significant impact of graduation on their defensive line.
Prior to committing to UNC, Johnson took an official visit to Texas this week. He also received interest from several schools, including Indiana, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Rutgers, Texas A&M, Utah, and Virginia Tech.
In the last two seasons, Johnson played in 14 games for Maryland. In his freshman year, he recorded five tackles—four solo and one sack. This past fall, he increased his performance with 19 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss and another sack. He had his best game against Iowa in late November, where he achieved a career-high of six tackles.
As a 2023 high school recruit from Cheshire (Conn.) Academy, Johnson was rated a mid-three-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite. He was ranked as the No. 1,324 overall player in the country and the No. 142 defensive lineman, as well as the No. 8 prospect in Connecticut.
Johnson is the sixth Transfer Portal addition for UNC since the Spring Window opened on Wednesday. After acquiring former Missouri/Nebraska linebacker Mikai Gbayor on the first day, the Tar Heels also added Eastern Illinois punter Jacob Horvath, South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez, Marshall kicker Rece Verhoff, and Colorado wide receiver Adrian Wilson on Thursday.
