Michigan Transfer Jason Hewlett Set to Visit Virginia Tech

The Hokies are aiming to strengthen their defense, and linebacker Jason Hewlett could be a major addition for them this spring.

Hewlett, who recently announced his decision to transfer, has scheduled a visit with Virginia Tech. The former four-star prospect revealed on social media earlier this month that he was entering the transfer portal to explore new opportunities. “After careful consideration and reflection, I have made the difficult decision to enter the transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining,” Hewlett wrote.

In addition to Virginia Tech, Hewlett has visits planned with Boston College, West Virginia, and Cal.

As a high school recruit, Hewlett was a versatile athlete, showcasing his skills at safety, linebacker, wide receiver, and even quarterback. Known for his combination of speed and size, he was a standout at Chaney High School, where his background as a track athlete gave him a natural edge in terms of fluidity and movement. Despite his raw talent, he lacked the polished instincts that typically stand out on tape, but his athleticism allowed him to make plays. He was a dynamic, if unrefined, player who could capitalize on opportunities created by his teammates, though his rawness made him a developmental prospect at the college level. It was no surprise when he committed to Michigan in 2023.

At Michigan, Hewlett primarily contributed on special teams and worked as a scout team player. After redshirting in 2023, he saw action in nine games during 2024, with his only defensive tackles coming in a blowout win against Northwestern. With starters Jaishawn Barham and Ernest Hausmann ahead of him on the depth chart for 2025, Hewlett found himself buried and ultimately decided to transfer.

While one team’s loss can be another’s gain, the Hokies were involved in Hewlett’s recruitment out of high school, so this could be a chance to bring him in and develop his potential. Linebackers coach Xavier Adibi and Sam Siefkes could help Hewlett develop into a key defensive piece. However, with the Hokies’ current roster, they might also look at moving him to safety, depending on how their defense shapes up.

The Hokies’ defense for 2025 is still a work in progress, with several positions up for grabs. While linebackers Caleb Woodson, Kaleb Spencer, and Jordan Bass are expected to get the most reps, the safety position remains wide open, which could work in Hewlett’s favor. At 6’2″ and 227 pounds, Hewlett has the ideal build for a modern hybrid safety, making him an intriguing prospect who could contribute immediately. While there’s no rush for Hewlett, finding a spot where he has the best opportunity to play will be a priority, and Virginia Tech seems to be one of the most promising options for him, regardless of the position.
