Chargers Trade Proposal Adds $6 Million Breakout Star for Justin Herbert
The Los Angeles Chargers are once again being linked to the possibility of adding a young, $6 million wide receiver who is coming off a breakout season. With the Chargers still seeking to bolster their receiving corps, this move would address their need for additional depth and an experienced veteran on the outside.
While Los Angeles is solid in the slot with 2024 breakout player Ladd McConkey, the team is uncertain about their starting boundary receivers, Quentin Johnston and Mike Williams, who both have question marks surrounding them.
In a recent article identifying potential trade candidates for each team, Pro Football & Sports Network’s Sterling Xie suggested wide receiver Alec Pierce of the Indianapolis Colts as a trade target for the Chargers. Xie highlighted that the Chargers might be the perfect fit for Pierce, noting that they lost Josh Palmer in free agency and still employ Pierce’s former offensive coordinator, Marcus Brady, as their passing game coordinator.
The Colts have a crowded wide receiver room with Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, Adonai Mitchell, and Pierce, which could lead to them trading one of these players. With Pierce entering the final year of his contract, it seems likely that he could be the one on the move.
Pierce had a career-best 2024 season, recording 824 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, despite the Colts’ struggles at quarterback. With a much more reliable quarterback like Justin Herbert, Pierce could truly shine in his fourth season. He would provide a better option on the outside than Williams at this point in his career, and his deep-threat ability—evidenced by his NFL-leading 22.3 yards per reception in 2024—would be a significant asset to the offense.
As a former second-round pick in the final year of his $6 million rookie deal, Pierce likely wouldn’t come at too high a cost—probably just a Day 3 draft pick to acquire. While the Chargers might aim for a bigger move to strengthen their wide receiver group heading into a season where they aim to build on last year’s playoff appearance, Pierce would still be a valuable addition.
