Panthers-Texans Trade Proposal Could Land Carolina Versatile 62-Sack Defender
The Carolina Panthers have made significant strides in upgrading their defense ahead of the 2025 season, a key priority for general manager Dan Morgan. However, they could still use additional help on the defensive line, both inside and on the edge. This has led analyst Anthony Palacios to suggest the Panthers as a potential trade destination for versatile Houston Texans defender Denico Autry.
“The Panthers have done an excellent job this offseason, improving their defense after focusing on getting weapons for quarterback Bryce Young last year,” Palacios wrote. “With Jadeveon Clowney possibly being on the trade block, Carolina could use more powerhouse talent to strengthen their pass rush. While Tershawn Wharton’s signing adds depth, trading for Autry could maximize the defense alongside Derrick Brown.”
This suggestion follows a report from Pro Football & Sports Network’s Sterling Xie, who also listed Autry as a potential trade candidate this offseason.
Autry has been a consistently underrated edge rusher throughout his career. From 2018 to 2023, he posted 7.5 sacks or more in every season except one, including a career-high 11.5 sacks in 2023 with the Tennessee Titans. Over his career, Autry has accumulated 62 sacks.
In 2024, Autry signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Texans, but his season was disrupted by a suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy, causing him to miss six games. After returning, the 34-year-old recorded three sacks in 10 games, adding another sack during the playoffs.
While Autry will turn 35 in July, he can still contribute to Carolina’s pass rush and has the flexibility to move inside if needed. Pairing him with edge rushers like D.J. Wonnum, Jadeveon Clowney, Patrick Jones II, and Tershawn Wharton would give the Panthers a formidable defensive front.
In terms of trade compensation, Autry would likely command an early Day 3 pick, and Carolina has ample picks in that range, with two fourth-rounders and three fifth-rounders available.
Although it seems unlikely that the Texans would trade away a key edge rusher as they look to improve in 2025 after a disappointing season, the Panthers should stay alert to any potential developments regarding an Autry deal.
