Red Sox Key Player Set to Take Major Step in Return to Boston
The Boston Red Sox are showing positive signs as they move forward this season.
The team has been without three key starters to begin the 2025 MLB season, but things appear to be looking up. Brayan Bello has yet to take the mound for Boston, but all indications point to his season debut coming Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners. Meanwhile, Lucas Giolito and Kutter Crawford have also been absent from the big league roster.
Giolito has been progressing through the minor leagues, while Crawford’s status has been more unclear. However, MassLive’s Christopher Smith provided an update on Sunday, revealing that Crawford will head to Fort Myers on Thursday to begin extended Spring Training.
“Kutter Crawford (right patellar tendinopathy) will go to Fort Myers Thursday to likely begin throwing in extended spring training games,” Smith reported.
Crawford made significant strides in 2024, becoming an important innings-eater for the Red Sox. He led the American League with 33 starts, pitched 183 2/3 innings, and posted a 4.36 ERA. This was a big leap from his previous career-high of 129 1/3 innings in 2023.
When Boston’s rotation is back to full strength, the team will have some tough decisions to make with six capable starters: Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Walker Buehler, Bello, Giolito, and Crawford. There was speculation heading into Spring Training about the potential for a six-man rotation, but with only three expected starters to begin the season, that question hasn’t yet needed to be addressed.
Overall, it looks like the team is on the right track.
