The Georgetown men’s basketball team faced a significant setback on Monday when ESPN’s Jeff Borzello announced that rising senior Jayden Epps has entered the transfer portal.
During his second season with the Hoyas, Epps averaged 12.8 points, 2.3 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game. He is now seeking his third school, having begun his college career at Illinois.
Under head coach Ed Cooley, Georgetown improved from a nine-win season in his first year to finishing above .500 (18-16) in year two, largely thanks to the contributions of TCU transfer Micah Peavy (17.2 points, 3.6 assists, 5.8 rebounds) and freshman Thomas Sorber (14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds).
With a more talented roster around him, Epps’s role diminished, and although he led the Hoyas in scoring during the 2023-24 season, his offensive stats saw a decline. He maintained a similar shooting percentage overall and improved his three-point shooting to 34.4% from 30.5%.
Epps becomes the sixth Georgetown player to enter the transfer portal, joining fellow contributors Drew Fielder, Jordan Burks, and Curtis Williams Jr. The team is also waiting on Sorber’s decision, as he is exploring the NBA Draft.
Following the graduation of Peavy, Georgetown has now lost at least five of its top seven scorers from last season, which saw them go 8-12 in the Big East and endure three losses to DePaul. Malik Mack (12.9 points, 4.3 assists, 3.6 rebounds) is currently the only one confirming his return.
On the bright side, Cooley has been active in the transfer portal, securing four new players: KJ Lewis (Arizona), DeShawn Harris-Smith (Maryland), Isaiah Abraham (UConn), and Langston Love (Baylor). Notably, the Hoyas have no commitments from 2025 freshmen at this time.
In the 2024-25 season, the Georgetown Hoyas won against Washington State in the opening round of the inaugural College Basketball Crown before being defeated by Nebraska.
