Gonzaga’s Ben Gregg Enters Transfer Portal as Graduate Transfer
Ben Gregg, a senior forward for Gonzaga, made a surprising late entry into the transfer portal on Tuesday, confirming his decision to Gonzaga Bulldogs on SI. After committing to his hometown school over four years ago, Gregg, who stands at 6-foot-10, will enter the portal as a grad transfer. He joins the growing list of college basketball players hoping to secure an additional year of eligibility, even though they have already exhausted their eligibility.
Gregg joined the Zags in 2020, enrolling after graduating from high school early. His first season did not count toward his eligibility, so his 2021-22 season was considered his freshman year. While athletes are typically allowed five years of eligibility to play four seasons, some players are hopeful that ongoing legal cases involving NCAA eligibility rules will lead to a change in the framework. Rumors have suggested that the NCAA might grant additional years without legal action, but no concrete updates have emerged.
In order to be considered a grad transfer, a player must have completed their undergraduate degree and have remaining eligibility. Gregg, however, is focused on pursuing a professional career, acknowledging that there’s only a slim chance he will be granted an extra year of eligibility, which would allow him to complete his master’s degree.
During his time at Gonzaga, Gregg played a pivotal role on some of the team’s most successful squads, bringing energy and hustle off the bench in his early years before emerging as a key contributor by his junior season. As a senior this past year, Gregg started in 29 of 35 games, averaging a career-high 9.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He also posted the highest two-point field goal percentage in the West Coast Conference at 72.9%. Gregg scored a career-high 24 points twice, first in a win over Davidson in the Battle 4 Atlantis and again in a victory at Portland.
Throughout his career at Gonzaga, Gregg played in 141 games, ranking seventh in program history, and his 14 NCAA Tournament appearances are tied for third-most with Silas Melson. The Clackamas, Oregon native recorded 875 points, 533 rebounds, and 122 assists. Off the court, he was also deeply involved in community service, helping raise over $250,000 for Giving Back Spokane and partnering with Family Promise of Spokane to provide housing support. As a result of his community efforts, Gregg was named to the inaugural Allstate and NACDA Good Works team at the end of the season.
Gregg is one of six rotational players set to leave Gonzaga this offseason, with Ryan Nembhard, Nolan Hickman, and Khalif Battle graduating, and Dusty Stromer and Michael Ajayi transferring to Grand Canyon and Butler, respectively. Although the Bulldogs have yet to land any commitments for the upcoming season, they do have promising news with Graham Ike and Braden Huff returning for the 2025-26 season.
Although the deadline for players to enter the transfer portal was Tuesday at midnight, they are still able to take their time before deciding on their next school. Gregg is the fourth Gonzaga player to enter the portal this spring, joining Ajayi, Stromer, and Jun Seok Yeo.
