The Hokies made a big splash in the transfer portal on Wednesday.
After having one of the top defensive lines in the ACC last season, the Virginia Tech football team is facing many uncertainties as they head into the 2025 season. The team lost several key players, including Aeneas Peebles, Wilfried Pene, Josh Fuga, Antwaun Powell-Ryland, and Cole Nelson. Coach J.C. Price is tasked with rebuilding the line quickly.
Returning players include Kelvin Gilliam and Kemari Copeland, who missed last season due to injury. They also brought in transfer portal recruits Jahzari Priester from Hampton and Arias Nash from Mercer during the winter cycle. When the team assembled on Wednesday morning, there were eight scholarship tackles, and Price and Brent Pry secured a significant commitment from one of the best remaining players in the transfer portal.
Virginia Tech football gets commitment from NDSU defensive tackle Kody Huisman
North Dakota State transfer Kody Huisman announced his commitment to Virginia Tech on Wednesday, providing the Hokies’ defense with a much-needed impactful presence along the line. Over four seasons with the Bison, Huisman accumulated more than 1,200 snaps, recording 73 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks.
In 2024, the 6-foot-4, 283-pound player made 37 tackles, with 7.5 coming for a loss. In the FCS semifinals against South Dakota State, he tallied six tackles, including two for a loss, as well as forcing a fumble.
Huisman is the first addition to the Hokies’ defensive line from the spring transfer portal and is expected to make a significant impact. While there are many key players for Huisman and the other newcomers to replace, his talent should strengthen the defense, provided everyone remains healthy.
