Virginia Tech Basketball: Kansas State Transfer CJ Jones Exploring Interest from Hokies

CJ Jones, a transfer guard from Kansas State, has been contacted by several schools following his decision to enter the transfer portal, with Virginia Tech among those showing interest.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are in the midst of a roster overhaul, bringing in new faces to strengthen their team. Recently, they added assistant coach Chester Frazier, general manager Nelson Hernandez, and transfers Izaiah Pasha and Amani Hansberry.

Jones’ collegiate career has been a mix of highs and lows. Last season, as a starter for 31 of 33 games at the University of Illinois Chicago, he averaged 11.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and shot 42.5% from the field and 37.8% from beyond the arc. However, his performance at Kansas State saw a drop-off. He started just nine of 33 games, averaging 18.9 minutes per game and posting 5 points per game on 40.7% shooting from the field and 30.9% from three.

Despite this underwhelming season, Jones remains a promising talent, which is why several programs are still pursuing him. Schools such as Indiana, USC, UNLV, Mississippi State, Seton Hall, DePaul, Memphis, New Mexico State, Missouri State, Sam Houston, Pacific, Sacramento State, Georgia Tech, and South Florida have all expressed interest.

Virginia Tech, which has seen some of its guards depart via the transfer portal—including Brandon Rechsteiner, Jaydon Young, Rodney Brown Jr., and Conner Venable—will need to add depth to their guard position. Jones could fill a valuable role for the Hokies, providing playmaking and floor spacing, which could increase his playing time.

While Virginia Tech remains a potential landing spot for Jones, it’s important to note that he also has other strong options to consider. Those programs could offer different opportunities, making his decision even more crucial.
