Texas Longhorns 3-Star Forward Enters Transfer Portal
The Texas Longhorns are seeing another frontcourt player depart as forward Jamie Vinson has entered the transfer portal.
Vinson, a 6-foot-11, 225-pound forward, spent one season with the Longhorns, appearing in nine games and averaging 2.2 points and 1.1 rebounds in 4.9 minutes per game. The news came shortly after Texas secured a commitment from St. John’s transfer guard Simeon Wilcher.
A native of Austin, Vinson was originally signed to Vanderbilt but de-committed last offseason. He took official visits to South Carolina, Rutgers, and Kentucky before ultimately choosing Texas. Vinson began his high school career at St. Michael’s Catholic Academy in Austin before transferring to the prestigious Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, a program known for producing top-tier talent like Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant.
Former Texas head coach Rodney Terry had praised Vinson’s potential during the season. After Sean Miller’s hiring, it was expected that Vinson would stay with the team, but now he’s looking for a new opportunity elsewhere for his sophomore year.
“A guy like Jamie Vinson is going to have a chance to be a good young player,” Terry said in November. “I like Jamie a lot, and finding (more) opportunities for him to be on the floor.”
Vinson’s best performance came in a win over Mississippi Valley State, where he scored a season-high six points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting. He also made his first collegiate 3-pointer in a victory over New Orleans. Despite this, he only saw action in one SEC game during the season, a loss to Alabama in February.
Vinson will now search for his next destination in the transfer portal after leaving his hometown of Austin.
