Tulane Green Wave Defensive Back Loses Star to Auburn Tigers
The Tulane Green Wave will face a significant setback in their secondary as standout defensive back Rayshawn Pleasant officially transfers to the Auburn Tigers. The news was confirmed by Pete Nakos of On3Sports on Wednesday evening. Pleasant had narrowed his choices down to Auburn and the USC Trojans, ultimately opting to join the Tigers’ roster.
A three-star recruit out of high school, Pleasant initially served as a depth piece before breaking out last season as a redshirt freshman. He proved to be a dynamic playmaker, scoring touchdowns both on defense and special teams.
Although expected to be a reserve at the start of the season, Pleasant’s big 100-yard pick-six in the opener helped him secure a starting spot for the remainder of the year. He also had two kick return touchdowns, showing his impact beyond the defensive side of the ball.
As a defensive back, Pleasant recorded 35 tackles (one for a loss), with the majority being solo stops, highlighting his effectiveness in the run game. In coverage, he was targeted 37 times, allowing 19 receptions for 166 yards and no touchdowns, according to Pro Football Focus.
With his transfer to Auburn, Pleasant will bring his aggressive style to DJ Durkin’s defensive scheme. Tulane had even begun experimenting with him as a nickel corner toward the end of the season.
The Green Wave will now be dealing with significant departures in the secondary. Caleb Ransaw is heading to the NFL Draft, further depleting their cornerback depth. The lone addition to the position group is Isaiah Wadsworth, who transfers from the Wofford Terriers. Wadsworth brings a wealth of experience, having played 1,725 snaps at cornerback, and is expected to step in as a starter.
The development of young defensive back Jack Tchienchou will also be crucial. Tchienchou, who has worked with head coach Jon Sumrall since their days at Troy, is another bright spot for the Green Wave’s defense.
