Cowboys Fans Should Be Concerned After Stephen Jones’ Questionable Draft Comments
The Dallas Cowboys may be setting themselves—and their fans—up for another letdown.
It seems the team is on track to repeat the same mistake they made in the 2024 NFL draft during the 2025 draft. Despite having one of the weakest running back groups in the league, Dallas chose to completely ignore the position last year. They stuck with Ezekiel Elliott as the starter, but his struggles were evident. Eventually, Rico Dowdle stepped in and performed better than expected, though the team still finished 29th in rushing yards overall.
At first, it seemed like the Cowboys had learned from that error, as they appeared to focus on running backs in the lead-up to the draft. However, after hearing from executive vice president Stephen Jones ahead of Day 2 of the draft, it seems that hope was misguided.
Jones downplayed the need to draft a running back this year, saying he was happy with what the team did in free agency and implying the position didn’t require any immediate attention.

If that approach holds, the Cowboys will enter the 2025 season with Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, and Deuce Vaughn as their three primary running backs. Williams, once a promising talent, has been slowed by knee injuries and only averaged 3.7 yards per carry in 2024. Sanders, similarly, had a rough season, gaining just 3.7 yards per attempt, though that was slightly better than his 3.3-yard average in 2023.
As for Vaughn, the 2023 sixth-round pick hasn’t yet found his footing in the NFL, with just 40 carries for 110 yards, averaging only 2.8 yards per attempt.
Dallas is pinning their hopes on improving the offensive line, which is why they selected Tyler Booker with the 12th overall pick. While that could help, it feels like the Cowboys might be setting themselves up for another frustrating season, similar to 2024.
