Seattle Mariners Hold On for 7-6 Win Over Miami Marlins, Extend Series Streak
The Seattle Mariners secured their sixth consecutive series win with a 7-6 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday, though it wasn’t without some late-game drama.
Seattle needed a 10th save of the season from All-Star closer Andres Munoz and a three-hit performance from Jorge Polanco to finish off the Marlins. The save also marked the first win of the season for starting pitcher Logan Evans, who made his MLB debut in the game. With the win, the Mariners improved to 16-12 and took sole possession of first place in the American League West.
“It’s April. We’ve got a long way to go,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said after the game. “But, obviously, we’re happy with how we’ve started. These guys are committed to staying in the moment, and that’s what gets you ready for each night. We’re in first place, but there’s still a lot of baseball left to play.”
Evans’ debut didn’t start smoothly, as he gave up a solo home run to Miami’s Agustin Ramirez in the first inning. However, the Mariners quickly responded, with catcher Cal Raleigh hitting a solo shot to tie the game. It was Raleigh’s 10th home run of the season, moving him to the top of the American League leaderboard and tying him for the MLB lead with former Mariner Eugenio Suarez.
“I wish I didn’t have to get that first home run out of the way early,” Evans said. “But solo home runs aren’t going to kill you. I knew one run wasn’t going to win it for them, or lose it for us. I just focused on going out there and winning the game.”
The Mariners gave Evans plenty of run support. Julio Rodriguez delivered a two-RBI single in the second, followed by Jorge Polanco’s RBI double. Polanco, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, has now had back-to-back multi-hit games and extended his streak of games with a hit to five. Polanco added another RBI single in the fourth, and J.P. Crawford capped off the Mariners’ scoring with a two-run homer in the fifth. It was Crawford’s first home run of the season at T-Mobile Park, and he finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
“Big homer today. Big lift,” Wilson said. “J.P. has been putting together great at-bats all year. He’s been getting on base consistently, and lately he’s been able to turn on pitches like the one he hit today. That was a long home run.”
Evans was pulled after five innings, having struck out three, walked three, and allowed two earned runs on two hits, including one home run. When he left the game, Seattle held a 7-2 lead.

“I thought it was cool to get a variety of strikeouts,” Evans said. “It showed I can attack with any pitch and have success.”
Evans outlasted Marlins starter Max Meyer, who had a dominant performance in his previous outing but struggled here. Meyer pitched four innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits, including one home run, and striking out six.
Miami wasn’t finished, however, and made a push in the later innings. Ramirez hit his second solo homer of the game in the sixth, cutting Seattle’s lead to 7-3. Then, in the eighth, Connor Norby hit a three-run homer to bring the Marlins within a run at 7-6.
But Munoz came on in the ninth and retired the side in order, sealing the win. He has now converted all 10 of his save opportunities this season, tying San Diego’s Robert Suarez for the major league lead.
The Mariners will have a day off on Monday before hosting the Los Angeles Angels in a two-game series starting Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. PT. Bryce Miller will take the mound for Seattle, while Jack Kochanowicz will start for Los Angeles.
