Iowa Hawkeyes Eyeing North Carolina Forward in Transfer Portal
The Iowa Hawkeyes are targeting a forward from the North Carolina Tar Heels in the NCAA transfer portal. This move comes as no surprise after a busy offseason for Iowa, which saw half of its roster depart following the firing of head coach Fran McCaffery.
New head coach Ben McCollum, who took over last month, has made significant strides in rebuilding the team and is now setting his sights on a player from a prestigious program.
Iowa recently hosted North Carolina forward Cade Tyson for a visit, according to Eliot Clough of Hawkeye Beacon. Tyson entered the transfer portal earlier this month after a challenging 2024-25 season where he saw limited playing time.
Before transferring to North Carolina, Tyson had a standout career at Belmont, averaging 15 points and 5.3 rebounds per game over two seasons with the Bruins. He shot an impressive 49.2% from the field, 44.6% from three, and 85.7% from the free-throw line.
However, his lone season at North Carolina didn’t go as planned. The Monroe, N.C. native averaged just 2.6 points in 7.9 minutes per game, shooting 40.3% from the floor and 29.2% from beyond the arc.
Now, Tyson, who has garnered interest from multiple schools since entering the portal, could potentially find a more prominent role with the Hawkeyes. Iowa, coming off a disappointing 17-16 season, could use a talent boost after a rough year that saw them finish 7-13 in Big Ten play, resulting in McCaffrey’s departure after 15 years as head coach.
