The Iowa Hawkeyes are pursuing a North Carolina Tar Heels forward in the NCAA transfer portal.
The Iowa Hawkeyes have been quite active in the transfer portal this offseason, which isn’t surprising given that they lost half their roster following Fran McCaffery’s dismissal.
New head coach Ben McCollum has quickly made a name for himself by bringing in talent since his hiring last month, and now he’s pursuing a transfer from a prestigious program.
Over the weekend, Iowa hosted North Carolina Tar Heels forward Cade Tyson for a visit, according to Eliot Clough of Hawkeye Beacon. Tyson entered the transfer portal earlier this month after a challenging 2024-25 season that limited his playing time.
Previously, Tyson excelled at Belmont for two seasons before transferring to North Carolina after the 2023-24 season. While with the Bruins, he averaged 15 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, boasting impressive shooting splits of 49.2% from the field, 44.6% from three-point range, and 85.7% from the free-throw line.
In his single season with the Tar Heels, the Monroe, N.C. native struggled, averaging only 2.6 points in 7.9 minutes per game, while shooting 40.3% overall and 29.2% from beyond the arc.
Tyson has garnered interest from several schools since deciding to leave Chapel Hill, and he could find a more prominent role with the Hawkeyes, who are in need of a talent boost after a disappointing season.
Iowa finished with a 17-16 record this past year, with a lackluster 7-13 performance in Big Ten conference play, ultimately leading to McCaffrey’s departure after 15 years with the team.
