New Duke commit Puts Duke Basketball Roster in Limbo

Cedric Coward Puts Duke Basketball Roster in Uncertainty

The Duke basketball program is now in a holding pattern as it awaits Cedric Coward’s final decision about his future.

Reports of Coward’s commitment to Duke on Monday evening may have been misinterpreted. While it was widely assumed that the former Washington State and Eastern Washington forward had officially joined the Blue Devils, that’s not the case. In reality, Duke is still competing with potential professional opportunities for Coward’s services next season.

“There’s no timetable on a decision,” the 21-year-old Coward told The Field of 68 shortly after announcing his intention to commit to Duke. “As I get more information, I’ll make a more informed decision about what’s best for me.”

Along with entering the transfer portal earlier this month, Coward also declared for the 2025 NBA Draft.

At 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds, Coward, who averaged over 15 points and six rebounds in each of his last two seasons while also shining as a defender, has been projected by several draft experts to be selected either late in the first round or early in the second.

This means Coward has significant motivation to remain in the draft pool.

The deadline to withdraw from the 2025 NBA Draft while keeping NCAA eligibility is May 28. Currently, Coward is ranked as the No. 13 overall prospect in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports.
