Padres’ Manager on 4-Game Skid: ‘The Sky Is Not Falling’
The San Diego Padres were one of the hottest teams in baseball to start the 2025 season.
With contributions from unexpected players like Gavin Sheets, Nick Pivetta, and Alek Jacob, alongside strong performances from established stars like Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Michael King, and Robert Suarez, the Padres raced out to a 17-7 record.
However, injuries to key players like Jackson Merrill and Luis Arraez have slowed the team down, and they’re currently on a four-game losing streak. The Tampa Bay Rays came into San Diego and completed a sweep, with the final loss coming on Sunday.
While some might panic, manager Mike Shildt isn’t one of them.
Speaking after the loss to the Rays, Shildt remained upbeat, expressing confidence that the Padres would bounce back ahead of a crucial series against the San Francisco Giants later this week.
“The sky is not falling,” Shildt said. “It’s never as bad as it seems. It might feel that way, but in this clubhouse, we know the difference between disappointment and panic. We’re disappointed, sure. But I can say with full confidence: we’re fine. This is part of the 162-game grind. Things won’t always go our way, but we’ll keep our heads up and move forward. We’ll be ready for Tuesday and the start of the Giants series. That’s a promise.”
Shildt, known for his positivity and leadership, is a manager who always advocates for his players. His ‘good vibes’ reputation is well earned from both current and former team members.
The season is still young, and with key players like Arraez, Merrill, Jake Cronenworth, and Yu Darvish sidelined, it’s much too early to be overly concerned.
