Ohio State’s Ryan Day Shares New Developments on QB Battle
Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day has provided more interesting updates regarding the team’s ongoing quarterback competition. With Will Howard now playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Buckeyes are on the hunt for a new starter.
Originally, Ohio State likely expected Julian Sayin to take over as the starting quarterback in 2025. However, significant developments during spring practice have changed the landscape, with Lincoln Kienholz now emerging as a serious contender for the role.
Day recently revealed that, heading into the spring game, Kienholz was slightly ahead of Sayin in the race. However, after watching Sayin’s strong performance in the spring game, Day noted that the competition had tightened considerably.
“I felt like Lincoln, going into the spring game, was a little bit ahead of Julian. And then I thought, if you just watch the game, Julian probably performed a little bit better than Lincoln during the spring game. And here we are,” Day told reporters. “So going back through, watching the spring practices, looking at the grades, they’re very similar. So we’ll take it into the summer. And we’ll let them play.”
The closeness of the competition is surprising, especially given the high expectations surrounding Sayin when he was recruited as a five-star prospect. He even attracted some early Heisman Trophy attention this offseason, despite having thrown just 12 passes in 2024.
While Kienholz may have more experience under his belt, which complicates Day’s decision-making, the overall quarterback situation remains up in the air. Sayin is still the favorite to claim the starting spot, but the QB battle will continue to evolve throughout the spring and summer months.
