Colin Cowherd Shares Bold Thoughts on Shedeur and Deion Sanders
The debate surrounding why Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft continues to spark discussion.
The Browns, however, believe they made a major steal by selecting the Colorado star in the fifth round. Still, many are left wondering why the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders slipped so far down the board.
Colin Cowherd, the well-known host of The Herd on FS1, weighed in on the matter this week, offering a strong perspective. He emphasized that Shedeur Sanders’ draft slide wasn’t due to NFL teams misjudging his talent.
“It’s not easy to find a franchise QB, but stop making Shedeur and Deion Sanders the victim here. They’re not,” Cowherd stated. “It’s all really explainable.”
To further make his point, Cowherd highlighted a number of top NFL quarterbacks who were correctly evaluated and selected in the first round, stressing that if Sanders were truly at that level, he wouldn’t have fallen to the fifth round.

Cowherd’s assessment points to the fact that NFL teams clearly evaluated Sanders differently than many analysts and pundits. While that may be true, it doesn’t diminish Sanders’ talent or his potential to build a successful career.
As Browns general manager Andrew Berry told Sanders during their draft call, “It’s not about where you’re drafted, it’s about what you do from here.”
Berry and the Browns have made it clear that the team’s quarterback position will be an open competition, involving Sanders, fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, veteran Joe Flacco, and former first-round pick Kenny Pickett.
This means Sanders will have a legitimate opportunity to prove himself and fight for the starting role in the months to come.
