Marshall Adds Another West Virginia Transfer to Roster

Marshall continues to strengthen its roster by bringing in another former West Virginia player.

Tony Gibson, who previously served as West Virginia’s defensive coordinator and is now the head coach at Marshall, has been steadily building a pipeline between Morgantown and Huntington since taking over the Herd.

This week, Gibson secured a commitment from Sammy Etienne, a defensive back who is set to begin his freshman season at Marshall. Etienne, part of West Virginia’s 2025 recruiting class, was an early enrollee at WVU and participated in spring practices before entering the transfer portal. He had previously received offers from schools like Akron, Charlotte, Colorado, Georgia State, Kansas State, Liberty, UAB, USF, and UT Martin, among others.

Although Etienne only appeared in five games during his senior season at Lakeland High School, he made a significant impact as a junior, recording 59 tackles, four passes defended, and an interception, which helped him gain recognition.

Etienne becomes the fourth former Mountaineer to transfer to Marshall this offseason, joining offensive lineman Bryce Biggs, running back Judah Price, and defensive back Zah Jackson. He will have four years of eligibility remaining, plus a redshirt year he can utilize.
