Eagles Secure First Signing of NFL Draft Pick
The Philadelphia Eagles made a significant move on Friday, officially securing their first draft pick of 2025.
After making 10 selections in this year’s NFL Draft, the Eagles are looking to build momentum for the future. With the draft wrapped up last Saturday, the team wasted no time in finalizing a deal with one of their rookies. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Eagles became the first team to sign a draft pick, inking fifth-round linebacker Smael Mondon to a four-year contract worth $4.595 million.
“Mondon, selected No. 161 overall in the fifth round of the 2025 Draft out of Georgia, has signed a four-year, $4.595 million deal,” Schefter said.
Mondon spent four seasons at Georgia, where he accumulated eight sacks and 212 total tackles across 51 games. In his 2024 season, he recorded 57 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, and three passes defended in 10 games played.
At the NFL Combine, Mondon impressed with his physical attributes, earning a prospect grade of 6.31, which indicates he’s likely to become a solid starter. He ranked as the third-best linebacker overall, with an overall score of 75.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein highlighted Mondon’s strengths, noting his physicality and speed. “Mondon is quick to flow downhill and can challenge blockers with authority. While he’s still working on diagnosing plays and fitting into the right spots, his speed and ability to cover ground are assets. He has the talent to contribute on passing downs, showcasing skills in coverage and blitzing. Though his run-game instincts may take some time to develop, he’s a proven, battle-tested player with the potential to start and make an impact, even contributing on special teams.”
Though he wasn’t a top pick, Mondon has the tools to make an immediate impact in 2025.
