The Detroit Red Wings are in the market for a starting goaltender, and one fan-generated trade proposal would see them land a big name to fill that void.
Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM trade simulator, a user suggested a major offseason trade that would bring veteran goalie John Gibson to Detroit from the Anaheim Ducks.

This deal would be significant for both sides. Detroit would finally acquire a reliable No. 1 goalie in Gibson, while Anaheim would gain a top goaltending prospect in Cossa, a young NHL forward in Berggren, and two additional draft picks to aid their rebuild.
Gibson, a three-time NHL All-Star, still has two years left on his eight-year, $51.2 million contract. Last season, he posted an 11-11-2 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. For a Red Wings team that has struggled in net, he could be the stabilizing presence they’ve lacked for nearly a decade.
Cossa, the 15th overall pick in the 2021 draft, is among the NHL’s top goaltending prospects. However, Detroit might feel comfortable parting with him due to the emergence of another promising young goalie, Trey Augustine. If dealt, Cossa could form a future tandem with Anaheim’s current starter, Lukas Dostal.
Berggren, a restricted free agent, would give the Ducks additional forward depth. He recorded 12 goals and 12 assists across 75 NHL games.
Goaltending has been a glaring issue in Detroit’s ongoing playoff drought, now stretching nine consecutive seasons. General manager Steve Yzerman recently emphasized the need to improve at the position.
“We need the goalie to stop the puck more,” Yzerman stated during his end-of-season press conference.
New head coach Todd McLellan echoed that sentiment, saying, “We need better goaltending, and that’s not just on (goalie coach) Alex Westlund. That’s on the goaltenders, the head coach, and everyone involved.”
While Detroit has Petr Mrazek and Cam Talbot under contract for next season and Cossa pushing for a roster spot, a trade for Gibson would bring immediate help.
As for Gibson, trade speculation has followed him for several years. With Dostal now the Ducks’ starter, Gibson acknowledged in March that he was open to a move.
“I’ve been in trade rumors for three or four years now,” he told SiriusXM NHL Network Radio. “It gets a little tiring. I let my agent handle that, and I just focus on playing and enjoying the game.”
