Could Boston bring back this fan favorite slugger?
An opportunity for a potential first base option for the Red Sox emerged on Sunday.
The Chicago White Sox made several roster changes ahead of their series finale against the Houston Astros, including designating infielder Bobby Dalbec for assignment. With Dalbec not guaranteed to remain with Chicago, this creates a chance for the Red Sox.
Boston recalled Abraham Toro after placing Triston Casas on the injured list due to a left patellar tendon rupture. Romy González took over first base responsibilities after it was confirmed that Casas would miss the remainder of the season. Manager Alex Cora expressed confidence in both Toro and González at first base, but chief baseball officer Craig Breslow indicated that all options are still on the table.
Dalbec should definitely be considered, particularly given the limited appeal of external options.
The 29-year-old had a standout season in 2021 with the Red Sox, hitting 25 home runs, but his performance declined over his last three seasons in Boston. Dalbec mainly played in Triple-A Worcester, where he thrived and demonstrated his potential for the major leagues. However, he struggled to maintain the power he showcased in Triple-A and signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox last offseason.
Dalbec may not be a superstar, but he’s a reliable choice. González isn’t a conventional first baseman and primarily played as a utility player during his time with the Red Sox, which is what Boston originally intended for Dalbec. Toro is also a utility infielder with limited experience at first base. It’s reasonable to say that Dalbec could be an improvement over Toro.
One challenge Boston might face in pursuing Dalbec is determining how dedicated it is to the veteran player. Dalbec probably prefers not to spend too long in the minors and would likely seek guarantees that he would have an opportunity to play in the major leagues.
Nevertheless, Dalbec would be a great choice if the Red Sox decide to go after him, and it would bring things full circle for Dalbec to (temporarily) step in for Casas, just as the 25-year-old did in 2022.
