The 6-foot-3, 312-pound lineman is a seasoned five-year college player who offers versatility to the Hokies. He began his career at Tulsa, where he played three years under head coach Philip Montgomery, who is now Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator. He then transferred to Auburn and spent two seasons there, reuniting with Montgomery in 2023.
According to PFF, Muskrat has accumulated 1,338 career offensive snaps. After participating in four games (204 snaps) and redshirting in 2020, he was limited to just 39 snaps in 2021 due to an injury. He bounced back to become a starter at Tulsa in 2022, playing 848 snaps.
At Auburn, he primarily served as a backup, logging 220 offensive snaps in 2023 and only 27 in 2024. However, he contributed on special teams during those two years, totaling 118 snaps.
Muskrat adds flexibility to the Hokies’ offensive line. While he mainly played right tackle (1,236 snaps), he also took 49 snaps at left tackle and 45 at left guard.
His PFF ratings reveal a varied performance:
- 2024 (27 snaps at Auburn): 81.6 overall, 76.2 in pass blocking, 79.2 in run blocking
- 2023 (220 snaps at Auburn): 62.9 overall, 50.0 in pass blocking, 65.0 in run blocking
- 2022 (848 snaps at Tulsa): 61.2 overall, 61.8 in pass blocking, 61.3 in run blocking
- 2021 (39 snaps at Tulsa): 60.3 overall, 33.7 in pass blocking, 71.5 in run blocking
- 2020 (204 snaps at Tulsa): 59.4 overall, 57.0 in pass blocking, 58.3 in run blocking
Originally from Berryville, Okla., Muskrat played high school football at Bentonville West High School in Arkansas, where he was an all-state honoree. Before that, he played on the defensive line at Choctaw High School in Oklahoma. He was initially a two-star recruit with no offers other than from the Golden Hurricanes, according to 247Sports.
Muskrat marks the 28th commitment from the transfer portal for Tech this offseason and the ninth following spring practice. He’s one of five new additions to the offensive line, joining Tomas Rimac, Kyle Altuner, Lucas Austin, and Gavin Crawford, all of whom came from West Virginia with Matt Moore.
With Muskrat on board, the Hokies now have 14 scholarship offensive linemen heading into the 2025 season. They only lost one projected two-deep player, Bob Schick, after spring practice. According to Andy Bitter, the lineup looked like this:
Starters: LT Johnny Garrett, LG Layth Ghannam, C Kyle Altuner, RG Brody Meadows, RT Tomas Rimac
Backups: LT Aidan Lynch, C Tommy Ricard, RG Montavious Cunningham, RT Lucas Austin
Muskrat is expected to play a role in the two-deep, likely at tackle, which could allow Rimac to move inside to guard.
