Hokies add ACC linebacker Michael Short from UNC
North Carolina transfer linebacker Michael Short has officially committed to Virginia Tech.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker has two years of eligibility left and adds valuable ACC experience to the Hokies’ linebacker group. During the past two seasons with the Tar Heels, Short played in 13 games, primarily contributing on special teams as a freshman before taking on a greater role in 2024. He registered 23 total tackles last season, highlighted by a career-high five tackles in a game against Duke, and earned a 75.0 defensive rating from PFF.
Hailing from Charlotte, N.C., Short had an impressive high school career at Mallard Creek High School, where he was named the conference defensive player of the year. In his senior season, he recorded 121 tackles, 12 sacks, and 26 tackles for loss.
His arrival provides new defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes and inside linebackers coach Xavier Adibi with an experienced option to help mold the future of Tech’s defense.
Short is the latest addition during a busy spring transfer portal season for the Hokies, joining a roster of recent transfer pickups that includes DL Kody Huisman (North Dakota State), DL Elhadj Fall (Georgia Southern), DL Immanuel Hickman (USF), IOL Gavin Crawford (West Virginia), CB Caleb Brown (Hawaii), LS Drew Doyle (Iowa State), and LB Antwone Santiago (Temple).
