The Washington State men’s basketball team has announced its involvement in the 509 Classic, signing a three-year contract to play against Eastern Washington at Spokane’s Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Cougars and Eagles are scheduled to compete on Wednesday, Dec. 17, marking the first of three annual matchups between the two regional schools.
The rivalry between WSU and EWU dates back over a century to 1907, when Washington State College faced Cheney Normal School. The Cougars have a dominant record of 59-13 against the Eagles, having lost only twice in the last decade. Both defeats came under current Cougar Head Coach David Riley, who previously led the EWU program.
“We’re thrilled to take part in the 509 Classic and bring Cougar basketball back to Spokane,” Coach Riley stated. “We’ve expressed our intention to play every team in Washington, and this event allows the Cougs and the Eagles to continue a historic rivalry that spans more than 100 years.”
