Ravens Sign Rookie Kicker Following Tryout
The Baltimore Ravens are adding competition for their starting kicker position.
After moving on from Justin Tucker, the Ravens are putting their trust in rookie sixth-round pick Tyler Loop to take over the kicking duties. However, they aren’t ready to hand him the starting job just yet.
On Monday, the Ravens announced they had signed former Wyoming kicker John Hoyland, who will compete for the role. Hoyland, a Broomfield, Colo. native, participated in the Ravens’ rookie minicamp from May 3-5 on a tryout basis.
During his career at Wyoming, Hoyland successfully made 73 of 92 field goal attempts (79.3%) and missed just one of 147 extra point tries. He was particularly reliable on kicks under 40 yards, converting 52 of 54 attempts in college.
In his senior season, Hoyland hit 15 of 19 field goals and made all 25 of his extra point attempts.
Additionally, the Ravens signed former Army offensive tackle Lucas Scott and former Louisiana-Lafayette defensive back Keyon Martin, both of whom also attended the rookie minicamp as tryout participants. Scott, a versatile lineman, played under Army head coach Jeff Monken, who is the cousin of Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Martin impressed scouts with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash at his pro day and recorded 56 tackles and two interceptions last season.
