Illinois Football Signs Bret Bielema to Contract Extension Through 2030

Bret Bielema will remain as head coach of Illinois football through the 2030 season after signing a new six-year contract extension on Tuesday.

In his four years at Illinois, Bielema has posted a 28-22 overall record and an 18-18 mark in Big Ten play. However, the program made significant progress last season, securing its first bowl win since 2011 and its first 10-win season since 2001.

In 2024, Illinois earned a spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings for a program-record four consecutive weeks. The team also appeared in 11 AP Top 25 polls and matched its record with four wins over ranked opponents. Under Bielema, Illinois has had 12 players drafted into the NFL, including first-round pick Devon Witherspoon (2023).

Bielema’s new contract includes provisions that could extend it through 2035 if he meets specific performance targets. His starting annual salary is set at $7.7 million, with potential increases based on future performance and continued tenure as coach. The contract also includes protections for the university in case he pursues other coaching opportunities.

This extension is a strategic move by the university. Had they not locked Bielema in now, there was a risk that his success could increase his value, prompting other schools to make offers, especially if the Illini continue to exceed expectations—perhaps achieving another 10-win season, a bowl game, or even a College Football Playoff bid.

While Bielema’s record in Big Ten play is currently just .500, the momentum around the program is undeniable. Since his arrival, Illinois has seen the largest attendance growth in the country, and with 18 starters returning from last season, the team is poised for continued success. Extending Bielema now secures his future at Illinois, sends a strong message to players and recruits, and keeps everyone focused on the team’s goals. Despite the higher cost, this decision was the right one for the program’s future.
