ESPN Names West Virginia’s Top Three Transfers for 2025

ESPN recently highlighted some of the standout transfers on the West Virginia roster, focusing on a few key players who could make a significant impact this season.

Predicting which transfers will contribute the most is always tricky, especially when many are stepping up from lower divisions. With over 60 new players on the roster, it’s a challenge to narrow it down. However, ESPN singled out WR Cam Vaughn, EDGE Jimmori Robinson, and CB Michael Coats Jr. as West Virginia’s top newcomers for 2025, and it’s hard to disagree with their picks. Here’s a closer look at each of them:

WR Cam Vaughn (Jacksonville State)

Vaughn was a major addition for the Mountaineers in the first transfer window. After losing most of their offensive production from last season, aside from Rodney Gallagher III, West Virginia needed a dynamic playmaker, and Vaughn fits the bill. What makes Vaughn especially promising is that he still has three years of eligibility left and is just beginning to tap into his potential as a receiver. He was a former quarterback in high school, which adds to his versatility.

EDGE Jimmori Robinson (UTSA)

Robinson had an impressive 2024 season, finishing with 43 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks. He was named the American Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, and his performance suggests he can be a major force on a rebuilding West Virginia defense. With his skillset, Robinson could also position himself as a potential NFL draft prospect in the future.

CB Michael Coats Jr. (Nevada)

Coats is a shutdown cornerback who could become a key player for defensive coordinator Zac Alley. Last season, Coats ranked among the best in the nation in passes defended, with 17. While it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the higher competition in Power Five football, if the transition is smooth, he has the potential to become an all-conference caliber player.
