Patriots Add Former Bengals RB Trayveon Williams to Roster
The New England Patriots are continuing to bolster their running back depth for the 2025 NFL season. On Wednesday, the team announced they’ve signed former Cincinnati Bengals running back Trayveon Williams after a successful workout at Gillette Stadium. Terms of the contract have not been revealed.
Williams, who spent six seasons with the Bengals, was originally selected by the team in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft (No. 182 overall). The 5’8″, 206-pound back has appeared in 68 regular-season games, rushing for 307 yards on 62 carries. The Texas A&M product also has 15 receptions for 74 yards and 33 kick returns for 743 yards. Last season, Williams played all 17 games, primarily contributing on special teams.
Joining the Patriots’ running back group, Williams will provide depth behind expected starter Rhamondre Stevenson. He’ll also compete with 2025 second-round draft pick TreVeyon Henderson, veteran Antonio Gibson, and Terrell Jennings. Williams, who has been a regular contributor on special teams, may also compete for the kick returner role alongside Gibson and wide receiver Javon Baker. Over the past three seasons, Williams has played more than 50% of Cincinnati’s special teams snaps.
To make room for Williams on the roster, the Patriots released defensive tackle Eric Johnson II. Johnson, who was claimed off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts in August 2024, played in 11 games last season and recorded 17 total tackles. The 6’4″, 320-pound defensive lineman was a fifth-round pick (No. 159 overall) by Indianapolis in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Missouri State.
