Since trading away Mookie Betts, the Boston Red Sox haven’t been the same. In the five seasons following his departure, they’ve only reached the postseason once.
During that period, the organization scaled back its spending and prioritized developing young talent while still trying to field a competitive roster. Chaim Bloom oversaw this transition and made several puzzling moves along the way.
Among those was the signing of veteran pitcher Corey Kluber, who was 37 at the time and named the team’s Opening Day starter. Now, the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner has taken on a new position in baseball—as the Cleveland Guardians’ Special Assistant for pitching.
Corey Kluber Takes on a New Role
Kluber is returning to the team he spent nine seasons with, now serving in an advisory role with the Guardians’ pitching staff. His experience could be a welcome addition, as Cleveland currently ranks 21st in MLB with a 4.14 team ERA.

This marks Corey Kluber’s first position in baseball since retiring following his stint with the Red Sox. He joined Boston in 2023 on a one-year, $10 million contract.
Unfortunately, his time in Boston didn’t go as planned. It turned out to be the toughest season of his career, as he finished with a 3-6 record and a 7.04 ERA. After just nine starts, Kluber was pulled from the rotation and reassigned to the bullpen.
Despite the struggles, he did notch the first save of his career with the Red Sox. However, injuries soon followed, landing him on the injured list and ultimately bringing his season—and his tenure in Boston—to an end.
Now stepping into a front-office role with the Guardians, Kluber could be laying the groundwork for a potential coaching career. While his time in Boston didn’t leave a lasting mark, this opportunity might be the beginning of a promising next chapter in baseball.
