Kirby Smart Named Top Head Coach in College Football by ESPN
ESPN has ranked Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart as the best head coach in college football.
In just nine seasons at the University of Georgia, Smart has already established himself as the greatest coach in Bulldogs history. With back-to-back national championships, numerous first-round NFL draft picks, and several appearances in the College Football Playoff, his legacy at Georgia is firmly secured.
However, according to ESPN, Smart’s accomplishments extend beyond just being the best in Georgia’s history. In their ranking of the top 10 head coaches in college football, Smart took the number one spot.
“Smart has more first-round NFL draft picks than losses in his nine years at Georgia, and with back-to-back national titles in 2021 and 2022, it’s hard to argue that anyone else should hold the top spot, especially with Nick Saban retired,” wrote ESPN’s Mark Schlabach. He added that while Ryan Day of Ohio State or Dabo Swinney of Clemson could potentially challenge for the top spot if they won another national title, he doesn’t see Georgia’s program slipping anytime soon.
Smart earned 11 of 12 first-place votes in this year’s rankings, marking the second consecutive year he has been recognized as the best coach in college football.
This season, Smart’s coaching abilities will be put to the test as the Bulldogs face several top 10 teams. Additionally, Georgia will need to replace many key players who left for the NFL last season.
