Astros Manager Explains Unusual Reason for Star Infielder’s Day Off
The Houston Astros are giving their standout shortstop, Jeremy Peña, a well-deserved day off on Sunday, marking the first game he’ll miss all season.
The Astros have had an up-and-down start to their 2025 season, currently sitting at 23-22, hovering around .500. They’re in third place in the American League West, trailing the 25-19 Seattle Mariners and the 25-22 Texas Rangers.
A key reason for their success this season has been the resurgence of their offense, particularly Peña, who’s had a standout year after a slow start to his career. Peña has quickly become the focal point of the Astros’ offense, and his rise has been a highlight of the season so far.
What’s especially impressive is that Peña has played every inning of the first 45 games, an incredible feat for a shortstop, given the physical demands of the position. Despite a few missed at-bats, he’s logged 394.2 innings in the field.
However, Peña’s ironman streak will end in game 46, as manager Joe Espada has opted to give him a day off. Espada recently explained his decision, providing a unique perspective on why it was necessary.

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com shared Espada’s full quote:
“He plays so hard, and sometimes you have to pull him back so he can relax and rest. We have another seven games ahead—three in Tampa where it’s going to be hot and humid—and then a critical series with Seattle to wrap up this long stretch of games. I want him rested.”
Espada’s decision seems wise given the heavy workload Peña has carried so far. Taking a break now will help avoid injury and allow him to stay fresh and perform at his best for the rest of the season.
While Peña’s absence for a game or two won’t hurt the team in the long run, ensuring he’s healthy and ready to give his best will be crucial for the Astros as they continue through the summer months.
