The 49ers Are Granting Brock Purdy a Full No-Trade Clause

The 49ers might be taking a big gamble here.

Not only did they give Brock Purdy a contract extension that makes him the seventh-highest-paid QB in the NFL based on annual average value, but they also included a full no-trade clause, as reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Before diving into whether this no-trade clause is a smart move for San Francisco, let’s take a moment to recognize that Purdy pretty much got everything he wanted, and he got it by mid-May. That’s impressive. His agent deserves a round of applause for absolutely winning this negotiation.

It’s likely that the 49ers initially offered around $40 million per season, maybe a little less. Meanwhile, Purdy probably started at $55 million annually, which is what quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence and Jordan Love are getting. So, he probably made a small concession, while the 49ers ended up bending quite a bit.

But for what exactly? A solid, not exceptional quarterback? Purdy fits well into Kyle Shanahan’s system and was a great bargain on his rookie deal, but he’s not elite. He’s not the player who drives the offense — he’s more like Robin, with Christian McCaffrey being Batman.

Now, Purdy is one of the most overpaid players in the NFL. No other team would have handed him this kind of contract or the no-trade clause the 49ers just did.

San Francisco better hope they know what they’re doing.
