UNC basketball slammed for what fans have been complaining about this offseason
What should fans expect from the UNC basketball team next season? While some remain optimistic about the team’s future, plenty of critics believe Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels could be headed for another challenging year. According to the crew at The Field of 68, Davis might find himself on shaky ground in the 2025-26 season.
In a recent podcast episode, UNC’s current situation naturally came up, especially since the offseason hasn’t gone as planned. Davis has missed out on several top recruiting targets, many of whom chose to sign with other powerhouse programs. Rob Dauster, founder of The Field of 68, didn’t mince words, openly stating that North Carolina’s performance in recent months has been underwhelming.

Hubert Davis continues to get called out for a rough UNC offseason
To begin with, Rob Dauster wasn’t impressed with how Hubert Davis and his staff addressed the point guard situation this offseason. Despite reaching out to several targets, UNC ultimately landed Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans. With Elliot Cadeau transferring to Michigan, Evans is expected to take over as RJ Davis’ replacement—something Dauster sees as underwhelming.
“They ended up with Kyan Evans, and all due respect to him—he was a solid player at Colorado State—but if you’re North Carolina trying to replace RJ Davis, and you lose Cadeau, then bring in the third-best player from Colorado State to run the point? That’s not exactly encouraging,” Dauster said.
Dauster was also underwhelmed by UNC’s other transfer portal pickups—Jaydon Young, Jarin Stevenson, Henri Veesaar, and Jonathan Powell—questioning the lack of a clear game-changer among them. While there’s still time to add more talent, Davis needs to move quickly.
Securing help on the wing remains a top priority, with some European prospects reportedly on UNC’s radar. Many are also watching closely to see whether Jamir Watkins withdraws from the NBA Draft. If he does, Davis must make a strong push to land him.
As things stand, Dauster doesn’t believe this UNC roster is built for a deep March Madness run. There’s still a chance for Davis to make impactful additions before the season begins—but whether he can pull that off remains to be seen.
