5-Star Recruit Xavier Griffin Reconsidering USC Commitment, Eyes Alabama, Texas, and Georgia

Five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin has once again become a key figure in the national recruiting scene after decommitting from the USC Trojans. The standout from Gainesville (Georgia) High School is now drawing significant attention from top programs, including the Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Longhorns, and Georgia Bulldogs, as the competition for one of the top defenders in the 2026 recruiting class intensifies.

Among these schools, Alabama appears to have the edge. Crimson Tide linebackers coach Christian Robinson has developed a strong relationship with Griffin, and the linebacker also has family ties to Tuscaloosa—his grandfather works near the campus, strengthening the connection. This bond, coupled with consistent communication between both sides, has positioned Alabama as the current frontrunner in Griffin’s recruitment.

Texas remains Alabama’s biggest competitor in this race, with the Longhorns making a strong impression on Griffin during a recent visit to Austin. Ohio State and Georgia are also staying in the mix, with both programs hoping to appeal to Griffin through their rich traditions and competitive environments. As Griffin prepares to schedule official visits, his recruitment is expected to heat up, and he will take his time evaluating his options before making a final choice.

Georgia, in particular, has worked hard to regain momentum in the race, with Griffin appreciating the Bulldogs’ intense practice atmosphere and competitive culture. He has also praised the authenticity and commitment of Georgia’s coaching staff. Ohio State, on the other hand, offers the prestige of one of college football’s most renowned programs, known for producing top NFL talent.

Griffin’s eventual decision will have a significant impact on the 2026 recruiting class. As the No. 2 linebacker and No. 28 overall recruit in the country, according to On3 Industry Rankings, his commitment could shift the balance of power among the top programs. Meanwhile, USC now faces a critical challenge in maintaining momentum without their former five-star recruit.
