Bucks GM Adopts Tough Negotiating Stance in Giannis Trade Talks—What It Means for the Nets
Reports suggest that Milwaukee Bucks General Manager Jon Horst is taking a firm approach in negotiations regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo, making it harder for the Brooklyn Nets to land the superstar. Following the surprise mid-season trade of Luka Dončić, which only cost the Los Angeles Lakers a single first-round pick, the Bucks appear poised to reset the market for superstar trades.
The Nets’ interest in acquiring Giannis has been known since last November. However, after a dominant season where the “Greek Freak” averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game, Milwaukee is reportedly unwilling to part with him unless they receive a significant return.
Horst is aiming to make sure that any team acquiring Giannis is left in a weakened state, even if it means the player may not find himself in a better position. As Sam Amick mentioned on the Ringer NBA podcast, “Jon Horst is not just trying to maintain good relations with Giannis—he’s committed to doing right by the Bucks.” If the trade results in a roster overhaul that leaves the new team in worse shape, Giannis may simply decide to stay in Milwaukee.
While the Nets have the assets to make a trade happen, if Milwaukee demands both young players and future draft picks, the deal could lose its appeal. Why dismantle your team for one player when his willingness to join your squad is partially based on the team around him?
Many expect the Nets to have a significant offseason, and rumors about Antetokounmpo are part of that. However, if they do build a new roster around him, Giannis would only be changing locations—not necessarily improving his situation.
The Lakers’ recent trade has shown that superstar players can be acquired for as little as a first-round pick and a star player. While Horst may struggle to get his ideal trade package, in today’s unpredictable market, anything is possible.
