Blackhawks Appoint Jeff Blashill as Their New Head Coach
The Chicago Blackhawks have officially named Jeff Blashill as their new head coach, following their mid-season split with Luke Richardson during the 2024-25 campaign.
Blashill takes over from Anders Sorenson, who had been serving as the interim head coach after Richardson’s departure. Blashill is now the 42nd head coach in Blackhawks history, and the fifth to lead the team since 2019, including interim positions.
At 51, Blashill brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings from 2015 to 2022. While his tenure included only one playoff appearance in 2015-16, which ended in a first-round exit, he posted a 204-261-72 record over his seven seasons with Detroit, with just one winning campaign. After being let go by the Red Wings in 2022, Blashill spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
“Jeff is an incredibly smart and talented coach with over 25 years of coaching experience across various levels, including the NHL and internationally,” said Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson. “He has excelled in developing young talent and blending that into team success, which aligns perfectly with our vision for the future. We’re excited for what lies ahead under Jeff’s leadership.”
The Blackhawks have not made the postseason since 2020, when they were eliminated in the first round. With rising star Connor Bedard entering his third season, Chicago is hoping Blashill can lead the team to new heights and help them become a playoff contender again.
