Angels Sign Former White Sox and Mariners Pitcher Sammy Peralta
After parting ways with a relief pitcher who later joined the Mexican League, the Los Angeles Angels have signed another former big league pitcher from the same league. Left-hander Sammy Peralta agreed to a minor league deal with the Angels on Monday and was immediately assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake, though he has yet to make an appearance for the Bees.
Peralta, 25, spent parts of two seasons (2023-24) with the Chicago White Sox, posting a 4.37 ERA with a 29-to-18 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 35 innings. In March 2024, the White Sox designated him for assignment, and he was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners five days later. The Mariners sent him to Triple-A Tacoma to begin the 2024 season.
However, Peralta’s stint in the Mariners’ organization was brief. In 19 appearances for the Tacoma Rainiers, he struggled, going 1-1 with a 9.24 ERA in 12.2 innings. He allowed 16 hits, 13 runs, and issued eight walks while hitting one batter. On May 23, 2024, the Mariners designated him for assignment, and three days later, he was claimed by the White Sox again.
The rest of 2024 saw Peralta bouncing between the major leagues and Triple-A. In nine games with the White Sox, he pitched 15 innings, allowing 21 hits and nine runs (eight earned). After the season, Peralta was outrighted to the minors and spent time in the Dominican Winter League, where he appeared in four games, posting a 7.71 ERA over 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, with one walk and six strikeouts.
Despite the struggles, Peralta remained determined to continue his career. Heading into 2025, he signed with the Veracruz Red Eagles of the Mexican League. There, he had a strong start to the season, pitching 21.1 innings with a 2.53 ERA and a remarkable 22-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The Angels’ bullpen has been a major point of concern this season, with a 6.66 ERA, the worst in the league. In an attempt to bolster their relief corps, the Angels have used 20 different relievers in less than a month. Currently, veteran Brock Burke and converted starter Reid Detmers are the only left-handers in the bullpen, with journeymen Andrew Vasquez, Victor Gonzalez, and 2019 draft pick Jack Dashwood rounding out their Triple-A roster.
Peralta, a native of Queens, New York, was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 18th round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of the University of Tampa. Earlier this month, the Angels also designated right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. for assignment, who then joined the Mexican League’s Tigres de Quintana Roo.
