Detroit Tigers Make History Not Seen Since 1984 Championship Season
The Detroit Tigers continued their remarkable season on Wednesday with a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, pushing their record to an impressive 33-17. With this win, the Tigers have now claimed 13 wins in their first 16 series.
Sitting at the best record in Major League Baseball, Detroit is aiming to build on last year’s appearance in the American League Division Series. With a dominant pitcher in Tarik Skubal, a World Series-winning manager in AJ Hinch, and valuable postseason experience, they seem well-positioned for a deep playoff run.
The Tigers have also achieved something not seen in the franchise for decades, matching a milestone last reached in their 1984 World Series-winning season.
According to Tigers PR, “We’ve won 12 of our first 16 series in a season for the first time since 1984 (13-1-2).”
On Wednesday, the Tigers employed six different pitchers in a bullpen game, a strategy that proved effective for Hinch and the team last season.
As Detroit heads into a weekend series against the Cleveland Guardians, they’ll face a team that’s been struggling lately. Cleveland has lost seven of its last 10 games, dropping to 26-22 and fourth place in the American League Central.
The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET, with rookie Slade Cecconi (acquired in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks) starting for the Guardians. Cecconi is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA, while Detroit’s Jackson Jobe, also a rookie, is 4-0 with a 4.12 ERA.
