Indiana will play three exhibition games against Puerto Rican teams as new coach Darian DeVries wants to develop bonds with a rebuilt roster.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries is following through on his early promise to take the Hoosiers on an international trip, marking a significant step in his first offseason at the helm.
Indiana Varsity Club members received an email detailing the program’s upcoming trip to Puerto Rico, scheduled for August 5–12. During the tour, the Hoosiers will play three exhibition games—on August 6, 9, and 11—against BC Mega and a Puerto Rico All-Star Team.
Although Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth, the NCAA classifies games played there as “foreign” under its regulations. According to NCAA Bylaw 17.32.1.1, schools are permitted to take one foreign tour every four years, and Puerto Rico qualifies as such under this rule.
The Indiana athletic department is expected to release more details about the trip to the public in the coming days.
This will be Indiana’s first foreign tour since their 2021 trip to the Bahamas.
DeVries previously emphasized the value of a foreign tour during an interview with the Indianapolis Star in March, noting its benefits in team bonding and early-season development.
“With a new coaching staff and a revamped roster, this is the perfect opportunity for us to get to know one another and build chemistry while gaining valuable game experience,” DeVries said. “Now it’s just about making all the logistics come together.”
DeVries took a similar trip during his time at West Virginia, and now he brings that approach to Bloomington as he looks to build momentum with his new team.
