Should the Texas Rangers Pursue Mets Slugger Pete Alonso to Boost Contention Window?

After a rough start to their road trip, the Texas Rangers were swept by the New York Yankees in the Bronx, pushing them back under .500. Despite solid pitching from their rotation, the Rangers struggled to generate enough offense to compete with the Yankees.

Offensive inconsistency has been a major issue for Texas this season, with the lineup unable to break free from a prolonged slump. While injuries have played a role, the team’s underperforming hitters are a bigger concern.

Two offseason signings, Joc Pederson and Jake Burger, have particularly struggled, contributing to the Rangers’ offensive woes. As a result, even though they could still be contenders in 2025, Texas will need to improve their lineup. While they might explore trade options before the deadline, bolstering the offense could also be a priority in the upcoming offseason.

Could Texas Make a Move for Pete Alonso?

Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently suggested that the Rangers could target New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso this winter. He noted that teams like Texas, Seattle, and Boston would all benefit from Alonso’s power bat and leadership.

Many teams are regretting not signing Alonso last offseason, especially given how quiet the market was for him despite his reputation as one of the best power hitters in the game. Though Alonso had a slightly down year in 2024 in terms of power, he has bounced back in a big way this season. So far, he’s slashing .292/.395/.535 with 9 home runs and 37 RBIs—his best numbers in several categories.

Alonso would have to opt out of his contract to become a free agent, but given his current performance, it seems likely he will do so.

For the Rangers, adding a power hitter like Alonso at first base would be a game-changer. Even though Burger seemed like a good offseason acquisition, he has yet to produce. While the offseason is still months away, first base could be an immediate need for Texas in the coming winter.
