Kansas Football Secures Commitment from 4-Star Running Back Kory Amachree

In a surprising turn of events, Kansas has landed 4-star running back Kory Amachree, despite expectations that he would commit to Michigan State. The commitment, made on Friday, marks a significant win for the Jayhawks’ coaching staff as they continue to build momentum in their 2026 recruiting efforts.

This comes just a week after top-ranked recruit JJ Dunnigan reaffirmed his commitment to Kansas, and now, Lance Leipold and his team have added another major prospect. Amachree, hailing from Haslett, Michigan, chose Kansas over other offers from Michigan State, Indiana, Duke, Pittsburgh, and even Harvard.

Ranked among the top tailback prospects in the nation, Amachree is the 16th commit in Kansas’ 2026 class. According to On3 rankings, he sits as the No. 6 player in Michigan, No. 26 running back in the country, and No. 365 overall prospect in his class.

Though Michigan State initially appeared to be the frontrunner for Amachree, the momentum shifted after Michigan State’s crystal ball prediction was pulled. A few days later, analysts began predicting a commitment to KU. Adding to the intrigue, Amachree’s father, Opuene, played for the Spartans, making this commitment even more remarkable.

With nearly 40 Division I offers, Amachree is one of the most sought-after running backs in the nation. His decision to commit to Kansas was influenced not only by the staff but also by his personal connection to the program—he and wide receivers coach Terrence Samuels’ son, Draven, have been close friends since childhood.

Running backs coach Jonathan Wallace played a pivotal role in Amachree’s recruitment, and following an official visit to Kansas in April, Amachree appeared to be won over by the Jayhawks’ coaching staff.

Amachree’s commitment marks the first running back of the 2026 class for Kansas, but the Jayhawks aren’t stopping here, as they continue to pursue top target DeZephen Walker.
