The Cardinals had a scare on Friday…
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night, but they had to do it without one of their key players.
Just before the game, Cardinals’ slugger Willson Contreras was removed from the lineup due to back spasms, as reported by MLB.com’s John Denton on social media.
“Cardinals 1B Willson Contreras was scratched from tonight’s lineup because of back spasms, per the club,” Denton posted.
No specifics were provided on how long Contreras might be out, if at all. MLB.com indicated that the decision was made as a precaution and that he was originally listed as day-to-day.
“Latest Injuries,” MLB.com reported. “1B Willson Contreras. Injury: Back spasms. Expected return: TBD. Status: Originally in the starting lineup at first base and in the cleanup spot, but was scratched before the game as a precautionary measure, per the club. Listed as day to day. (Updated: May 23).”
Contreras had a rough start to the season but has performed impressively in the past month. Since April 18, he has been batting .321/.412/.509 with five home runs and 21 RBIs over 31 games.
It’s no coincidence that the Cardinals started winning more games around the same time Contreras found his rhythm at the plate. Although there was some concern when he was scratched, everything seems to be under control for now.
