Vikings-Dallas Cowboys Trade Proposal Could Land Former All-Pro Playmaker Trevon Diggs

The Minnesota Vikings have focused on building depth at cornerback, but they could still be in the market for a big trade. This makes them a potential landing spot for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs.

Diggs, selected 51st overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, is entering the second year of a five-year, $97 million deal, which could make him available for the right price—potentially even at a discount.

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski recently included Diggs in his list of “players who need fresh starts,” suggesting that both Diggs and the Cowboys could benefit from a change. The trade would also help the Cowboys free up money to re-sign cornerback DaRon Bland, who becomes a free agent in 2025, or to extend edge rusher Micah Parsons. Sobleski proposed a trade in which the Vikings would acquire Diggs for a 2026 fifth-round pick.

Sobleski explained, “Both cornerback Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys may be better off without each other.” Dallas has bolstered their cornerback depth this offseason, adding former first-round pick Kaiir Elam and third-round draft choice Shavon Revel Jr. to a group that already includes DaRon Bland and Israel Mukuamu, who can cover the slot following Jourdan Lewis’ departure.

Given the Vikings’ $14.2 million in cap space, they have the financial flexibility to make a move for Diggs.

However, to make the trade work, the Vikings may need to offer more than Sobleski’s suggested price, especially after trading away their sixth-round pick.

Trevon Diggs Comes With Some Risk

Diggs, the younger brother of former Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs, had a stellar 2021 season, leading the NFL with 11 interceptions, 142 interception return yards, and two pick-sixes, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. He followed that up with another Pro Bowl season in 2022.

Despite his impressive talent, Diggs comes with a major red flag: injury history. Sobleski noted that while trading Diggs might seem counterintuitive due to his playmaking ability, he has struggled with injuries in recent years. Diggs has suffered two season-ending knee injuries, limiting him to just 13 appearances over the past two seasons. While he could bounce back, his performance since his standout 2021 season has been inconsistent, with only six interceptions in his last 30 games.

If the Cowboys trade Diggs after June 1, they could save $9.6 million while taking on $2.9 million in dead money, per Over The Cap.

Vikings’ Potential Trade Chips

Although the Vikings have expressed confidence in their current roster ahead of OTAs, they could consider trading certain players if the Cowboys demand more than just draft picks for Diggs.

Wide receiver Jordan Addison, the No. 23 overall pick in the 2023 draft, could be a trade candidate due to some off-field legal issues and the depth at his position. Backup tight end Josh Oliver might also be expendable, especially with starter T.J. Hockenson, a two-time Pro Bowler, fully healthy heading into the offseason program. The Vikings could always increase their draft capital offer if they deem Diggs worth pursuing.

However, with Minnesota’s recent struggles at cornerback and the tragic loss of fourth-round pick Khyree Jackson in a car accident last year, taking on another injury-prone player like Diggs could be a risky move.
