The Boston Red Sox made a somewhat unexpected roster move on Saturday — and it didn’t involve top prospect Marcelo Mayer.
While much of the attention was on Mayer and Alex Bregman, Boston quietly made another notable decision. The team recalled right-hander Luis Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester and, in a corresponding move, designated left-hander Sean Newcomb for assignment.
“The Red Sox today recalled RHP Luis Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester,” the team shared in a statement. “To make room on the active roster, Boston designated LHP Sean Newcomb for assignment.”
Newcomb pitched in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Orioles, surrendering one earned run over one inning, raising his ERA to 3.95 on the season.
He’s been a valuable contributor throughout the year. After making the Opening Day roster as part of the starting rotation, Newcomb transitioned to a bullpen role as the staff got healthier. He served as a long reliever, eating innings and stabilizing games when needed.
In total, he appeared in 12 games (five of them starts), posting a 3.95 ERA with 41 strikeouts and 17 walks across 41 innings.
Now designated for assignment, Newcomb will go through waivers. If he isn’t claimed by another team within the next seven days, he could either return to Boston’s minor league system or become a free agent.
Considering his performance this season, a team in need of pitching depth may be inclined to take a chance on him — though that remains to be seen. Regardless, the decision came as a bit of a surprise.
